Week 13: IV Videos

The Lowdown on Lowbrow: West Coast Pop Art
Popular cultures from the 40's to the 21st Century have influenced many artists during the time such as Pin-Ups, Comics, TVs,  cars, and things of that nature. It encompasses the media surrounding it creating the art work that is sometimes referred to as low down.

Bones of Contention: Native American Archaeology
This video discusses the essence of the Native American culture and archaeology. The fact that bodies were taken out of their burial sites was rather disturbing. The example of the woman who discusses the 22 white remains that were re-dug and then re-buried meanwhile the remains of a Native American woman and her child were sent off to be studied is upsetting as well. The way that Native American remains of the genocide were studied makes this an interesting but also controversial video depending on your position with the topic at hand.

Displaying Modern Art: The Tate Approach

Focuses on the success of Tate Gallery and how many visitors it has accumulated. I wish more galleries were like this one especially not charging for admission! Tate gallery is among the most popular museums in the world and has become a resource for my own exhibit project.

An Acquiring Mind: Philippe de Montebello and The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Revolves around those who curate the work of artists and the significance of what they do. Relates alot to our upcomong project and I am sure I will be able to pull specific suggestions from the video while composing my own projects.

The videos somewhat relate to the readings by again touching upon certain subjects more in depth than the readings do. Rather interesting videos with Bones of Contention intriguing me the most. The videos help more with conducting our upcoming project more than relating to our readings

Pop Art!

For one of my videos I have chosen the film on Andy Warhol Images of an Image because I've always remembered him as a very interesting character and was curious as to what light this video was going to shed on him. My second choice was Abstract Impressionism and Pop: Art of the 50's and 60's and was chosen due to my personal interest in that era alone, between the 1920's, 50's and 60's they are all my favorite time period based on the fancy and lifestyles.

Andy Warhol's video focused on his piece Ten Lizes and the history of his ever interesting art that was strong in repetition. It also focuses on his fascinating with photos of celebrities and is known to become famous off of the faces of Marilyn Monroe after her death, and then moved on to Elizabeth Taylor.

The film on Abstract Impressionism focused on Pop art.The concepts revolved around the title itself, abstract paintings are not to be looked at and understood but to be felt and given meaning.

The films relate to the text by touching base on some aspects of the chapters but not largely. I felt the films were very easy to understand as well as incredibly informative. They add depth by giving me a greater knowledge on bits and pieces of subjects or topics covered in the text.

Art Gallery Visit #2

Nancy Rubins, Drawing, 2007. Graphite pencil on paper. Put on a white wall with normal lighting, primary materials used are pencil and paper. Center on a wall with nothing surrounding it and is seen once you enter a doorway. This piece is very bold and has a great dominant feel to it. Seems out of the dark side.
Rachel Harrison, Vampire Wannabes, 2010. Wood, polystyrene, cement, acrylic, safety vest, and AirPort Extreme. Centered lighting, I see lots of color and shapes and undefined space.
Roxy Paine, PMU No. 22, 2005. Acrylic on canvas. Very interesting piece, installed on the wall, very simple in color however intricate.

These art pieces do not quite remind me of any other pieces, they are all pretty unique. Ive only had an emotional reaction to the second art piece because of the colors made me excited.

Buddhism V-Blog

I chose to view the videos on Buddhism and Hinduism because I am greatly interested in Buddhism and wanted something else to compare it to.  The key concepts of each video focused more on its origin and where it came from. And discussed significant temples to these religions. The videos related to the text in the sense that its covered the overall gist of it, by exploring their origins, meanings and beliefs. I preferred the Buddhism video the most because of my interest in this particular way of life.

Mask Making

I chose to go with African inspired masks of lions because the lion possess alot of qualities that I have, and because I am a Leo, as far as astrology signs go. The elements I used were shape, color, and proportion. Creating the mask made me feel like I was back in grade school, which is a foreign feeling but one I enjoyed.

Surrealism

The videos I chose for this weeks video blog were Dada and Surrealism as well as The Mystical North: Spanish Art from the 19th Century to the Present. I chose Dada and Surrealism because Surrealism is my most favorite art movement, (as I've shared before and will continue to share my love for surrealism began with my fascination for the work of surrealist Salvador Dali). And I went with The Mystical North Video because well it discusses "Spanish" art and being a Latin American woman I took great interest in the video.

The key concepts in the Dada and Surrealism video revolved around how this movement came to be and how artists such as Salvador Dali, Kirt Schwitters, and many more created some of their "unusual" pieces. The Mystical North concepts involved the effects some works of art took on Spain in a social aspect. Works by Dali and Goya are often odd and in some cases incredibly disturbing which reflects on Spain as being a rather dark place. Although dark, disturbing and unusual, this type of art speaks to me, and fascinates me over all.

These videos felt a little less relate-able to the text compared to other videos I've seen that match the text almost perfectly. In this instance the text seems a a bit more broad and focused tremendously on the movement rather than going into the depth on the lives, art and reasons of the dominant figures during this time.

I loved this videos! I can honestly say that I truly enjoyed these more than the last set of videos which I also enjoyed. It fed my knowledge on the types of art and artist that I favor. Plus Dali was referenced in both videos! Couldn't get better than that, I can read, and watch endless videos of him anytime. They added depth to the readings because the videos went beyond the artistic movements and more into the reason why these artists created art the way they did.
